On Monday 13 May 2019, I’ll be heading back down to Birmingham for the 2019 RCPCH Conference and exhibition. The conference, hosted by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), will be taking place between Monday 13 May and Wednesday 15 May 2019, with the theme ‘Paediatrics: pathways to a brighter future’.

The RCPCH Conference brings together the paediatric community (most importantly including children, young people and families) to explore current challenges and how we can work together to secure a bright future for young people, and the adults they will become. With inspirational keynote talks, networking events and a wide choice of sessions that explore the latest clinical updates and policy developments, there’s plenty to choose from! Check out the official programme here – and don’t forget to engage on social media using the hashtag #RCPCH19.

Each day of the conference has a specific theme, as follows:

  • Monday 13 May 2019: Using evidence to underpin innovation
  • Tuesday 14 May 2019: Investing in our workforce
  • Wednesday 15 May 2019: The future paediatrician

Together with Dr Hugh Davies (Paediatrician (retired); Chair Oxford A REC; former Research Ethics Advisor UK Health Research Authority); Jennifer Preston (Senior Patient and Public Involvement Lead, University of Liverpool/NIHR Alder Hey Clinical Research Facility), and Dr Bob Phillips (Honorary Consultant in Paediatric and Teenage and Young Adult Oncology, The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust; Senior Clinical Academic at Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, University of York), I will be co-facilitating a workshop titled ‘Making research easier; helping paediatricians navigate research regulation‘.

The workshop will take place on Monday 13 May 2019 from 11:40 to 13:00 in Hall 11a at The ICC, Birmingham. The practical workshop is aimed at everyone with an interest in research involving children, young people and families. The aims of the workshop are to:

  • Help present the case for research with children, young people and families, and how to constructively engage in debate;
  • Enable delegates to learn how (and why) to involve children, young people and families in research;
  • Present a suggested framework of “questions and considerations” to help review and design of research;
  • Help researchers navigate the complexities of regulation and review.

During the workshop, we’ll be handing out some simple guides which we have produced to aid people conducting research with children, young people and families. If you’re unable to join us, don’t worry – you can download your copies below!
